Hyundai Gives the Compact Elantra a Sci-Fi Glow-Up for 2027
Hyundai just pulled the covers off its newest compact sedan, and it looks like nothing the badge has worn before. The redesigned model debuted in South Korea under its home-market Avante name at the 2026 Busan Mobility Show, showing off angular styling and a fresh dose of in-car artificial intelligence. After years of familiar shapes, this one feels genuinely new.

This is the first full redesign since 2021, and Hyundai didn’t hold back. The grille gets an angular jawline in place of the old car’s wide, sweeping mouth. The headlights shrink down into thin perpendicular lines that trace the bodywork, giving the front end a serious, almost robotic stare. If you parked it on a science fiction film set, nobody would blink.
Down the sides, Hyundai dropped the Z-shaped creases that defined the outgoing car. Straight lines and more defined front and rear fenders take over, which plays nicely off that angular nose. The front and rear windows blend together with black trim along the B-pillar, while the C-pillar keeps the body color and separates the main glass from a small triangular window near the back. Five-spoke star-shaped wheels finish off the jagged theme.
Around back, the design borrows from the current car but cleans things up with fewer angles and a boxier shape. The taillights echo those vertical front lamps, running a line up each fender with horizontal beams across the trunk. The ducktail spoiler carries over too, just with crisper edges this time.
Inside, the Screen Wins More Real Estate
The cabin tells a similar story of reinvention. Hyundai shrunk the instrument cluster into a thin bar that sits near the windshield, then handed the saved space to a much larger center touchscreen. The result is a dashboard that leans heavily on the new display without burying everything in menus.
That matters, because plenty of automakers have gone all-in on touch controls and frustrated drivers in the process. Hyundai kept physical buttons for climate and media tucked beneath the screen, which is a small mercy you’ll appreciate on a cold morning. The gear selector moves to a stalk behind the steering wheel, freeing up the center console for extra storage. Fewer buttons, but the important ones stay put.
Meet Gleo, the Car’s New Co-Pilot
The headline tech feature is Hyundai’s Pleos Connect infotainment system, which brings more advanced software and an AI chatbot called Gleo along for the ride. It signals Hyundai’s push toward software-centric vehicles, where the screen and the assistant do as much heavy lifting as the engine. For a mainstream compact, that’s a notable step into the kind of conversational tech once reserved for pricier cars.
How deep Gleo’s skills run in the U.S. version remains to be seen, but the intent is clear. Hyundai wants the 2027 Hyundai Elantra to feel current the moment you sit down, not a year or two behind whatever’s in your pocket.
What’s Under the Hood
Power comes in two flavors. The gas-only model sticks with the familiar 147-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder, so no surprises there. The bigger news is the hybrid, which uses a new two-motor 1.6-liter setup good for 155 horsepower. That should give fuel-conscious shoppers a reason to look closer without giving up much pep.
There’s no word yet on a sportier N-Line trim or a full-blown Elantra N, though Hyundai has a habit of building those out later. Fans of the hotter versions will likely have to wait and hope.
When You’ll See It on the Road
The Avante goes on sale in South Korea later this year, and the Elantra should reach U.S. dealerships sometime in 2027. That timing lines up with a redesign this dramatic needing a little runway. If the styling holds up in person the way it does in photos, Hyundai may have given the compact sedan class a real shake. For buyers who thought the segment had gone quiet, this one’s worth keeping on the radar.
